The Second Mrs. Gioconda: End of the Month Review
Konigsburg is an amusing raconteur. The Second Mrs. Gioconda made for such an interesting backstory for the Mona Lisa. The author was able to paint a whole world in such a short page count and give life to long dead characters.
This book doesn’t shine a lot of lime light on da Vinci himself, but rather shows what kind of person he was. The story reveals what influenced his artistic decisions. Why did he paint what he did? How did he approach his art?
The main character of the book, who is my favorite, is Salai. He’s mischievous, not always honest, and funny. The book revolves around how he, as da Vinci’s apprentice, added to his master’s greatness. I love how Salai maintains his disposition, but matures simultaneously. I also admire how he thinks logically and knows the next move to make.
The Second Mrs. Gioconda is a witty and humorous. And although it’s a short read I found it entertaining and enlightening. Another amazing book by E.L. Konigsburg is From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.
