C.S. Lewis

In fourth grade I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and I fell in love. But at the time I didn’t realize that the author had other books.

This year I had to read Till We Have Faces and The Screwtape Letters for Literature class, and I fell in love again. I definitely liked The Screwtape Letters more than Till We Have Faces because I prefer satire, but it was nice to see more fiction from Lewis.

After I finished my essay on Till We Have Faces, I decided that I just had to read The Four Loves, and let me tell you, that book did it for me. C. S. Lewis is officially on my Favorite  Authors list.

The Four Loves is an incredibly insightful and thought provoking book. I found Lewis’s differentiations among and explanations of the types of human love extremely applicable to my life. My favorite part was how Lewis drew the parallels between human love and God’s love.

I believe that a large part of faith consists of giving myself reminders. It is easy to make mistakes, to do or say something I wish I hadn’t, so reminding myself of how I want to grow as a person helps strengthen my faith and helps me beware of the errors I am prone to falling into.

For me The Four Loves was a good reminder. A reminder about how I should treat others. A reminder about how to be balanced. A reminder about how I want Love to be the main driving force of my actions.

Anyway, I recommend you read The Four Loves with all my heart (couldn’t resist the pun 🙂 ), and hopefully you will find it as stunning as I did.

Some of my favorite C.S. Lewis quotes:

His [God’s] ideal is a man who, having worked all day for the good of posterity (if that is his vocation), washes his mind of the whole subject [his uncertain future], commits the issue to heaven, and returns at once to the patience or gratitude demanded by the moment that is passing over him.

– C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

It is easy to acknowledge, but almost impossible to realize for long, that we are mirrors whose brightness, if we are bright, is wholly derived from the sun that shines upon us.

Some writings of C.S. Lewis I wish to read in the future…

  • The Personal Heresy
  • The Great Divorce
  • The Abolition of Man
  • The Problem of Pain

P.S. Check out this cool channel called CSLewisDoodle. In each video the creator reads a essay or chapter of a book by Lewis while making comic-book-like doodlings to go along with the narration.

P.P.S. Check out this wonderful rendition of The Battle song from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe movie, one of my childhood favorites: The Battle

    1. I know! I was so excited when I found it!!! I finished watching one of the Screwtape Letter videos and The Necessity of Chivalry. I really liked the Chivalry one. Right now I’m about to start The Problem of Pain after that I’ll read The Abolition of Man.

        1. I actually hadn’t heard of the essay before the video. But seriously, everything Lewis wrote in The Necessity of Chivalry is spot on. The main message I got from all of his works I’ve read so far is the importance of balance, and I think The Necessity of Chivalry really embodies that. Can’t wait to see next Thursday’s post! 🙂
